Shouting Distance

Shouting Distance explores the people, places, and activities connected to Hurricane Creek and the Black Warrior River in and around Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Words and phrases were collected verbatim from the historical and contemporary sources. This borrowed language was then curated and composed into a new text.

Shouting Distance was composed and printed as part of Flow Tuscaloosa, a project recognizing the successful restoration of Hurricane Creek and inspiring action to protect the resources of the Black Warrior River watershed. The project was organized by Jamey Grimes and Julia Brock of the University of Alabama and the Selvage Collective. Selvage is made up of Teresa Bramlette Reeves, Kirstie Tepper, and Julia Brock. For more information and resources, please visit flowtuscaloosa.com.

The project exists as both a limited edition book and an installation at the University of Alabama Gallery at the Dinah Washington Cultural Center in Tuscaloosa, AL from June 3 – July 27, 2022.

The book is an edition of 100 copies and can be purchased for $15 by emailing me via this site’s contact form.
